What to Do When Red Wine Spills on Your Silk Scarf

Blot the red wine immediately with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside of the spot inward to keep it from spreading. Keep the silk as dry as possible and avoid rubbing; if the stain is noticeable after blotting, stop and plan for professional cleaning.

⚠️ Time-sensitive stain: See our emergency stain treatment guide for immediate first steps.

Steps to Take Right Away

  1. Act fast and handle gently. Lay the scarf flat on a clean, dry towel and keep it from bunching or twisting.
  2. Blot, don’t rub. Use a white cloth or paper towel to blot the wine. Press and lift repeatedly; don’t scrub, which can drive dye into silk fibers.
  3. Work from the edge inward. Start blotting at the outer edge of the stain and move toward the center to limit the stain’s spread.
  4. Switch to clean areas as you blot. Rotate to a fresh section of cloth/paper towel so you’re absorbing wine, not reapplying it.
  5. Lift excess moisture from both sides. If possible, place a dry towel behind the stained area and blot from the front to pull liquid through into the backing towel.
  6. Let it air-dry flat. If the spot is faint after blotting, allow the scarf to dry flat on a towel away from heat and direct sunlight so you can reassess the mark once dry.
  7. Decide next steps based on what you see. If the stain remains dark, has spread, or is in a highly visible area, stop experimenting and prepare to take it to a professional cleaner as soon as you can.
